EMDR in Brooklyn, NY offers a way to process and heal past experiences that are contributing to present day suffering. Through a mechanism called bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds), EMDR helps your brain and body feel fully safe and no longer burdened by material from the past.
xxWhat EMDR Sessions With Me Look Like xx
What sets EMDR apart is that it relies less on talking things through and more on your brain and body's innate ability to process and heal.
During a typical EMDR session, we'll be focusing on a memory, or "target," that is contributing to distress in the present. We'll start by orienting to how you feel, emotionally and physically, when you think about this memory and I'll ask you to measure your response on a scale of one to ten. Then we'll start doing sets of bilateral stimulation while focusing on the target memory.
While the bilateral stimulation is happening, you'll likely experience a number of thoughts, feelings, or body sensations. This is a sign that your brain is engaging in a natural healing process. Throughout the session, we'll pause periodically to check in with what's coming up for you. These verbal check-ins will typically be brief so we can allow plenty of space for the EMDR process to do its work.
Over the course of the session you'll start to notice the level of distress when thinking about the memory reducing. As the negative charge connected to the memory lowers, you'll likely also notice feelings of relief, tension in your body releasing, and renewed perspective
starting to form.

In order to ensure that EMDR sessions are safe, thorough, and effective, our work together will be guided by the following eight-phase structure:
1.) History Taking - Where we get to know your story, what brought you to EMDR, and what you're most needing to work through.
2.) Preparation - Where we equip you with tools for finding calm so that you can feel resourced and stabilized as we move into processing.

3.) Assessment - Where we identify target memories to process and the emotions, beliefs, and body sensations that come along with them.

4.) Desensitization - Where we utilize bilateral stimulation to bring down your level of distress associated with the target memories.

5.) Installation - Where we build up a positive belief that will take the place of any negative or limiting beliefs attached to target memories.

6.) Body Scan - Where we use bilateral stimulation to help your body and nervous system release any residual tension they may be holding.

7.) Closure - Where we engage in exercises to ground and steady you as we conclude our work for the day.

8.) Reevaluation - Where we check in at the beginning of the next session to see how the shifts from EMDR processing are sitting with you.
