My Approach to Therapy for Couples

In couples counseling with me, our focus will be on how and why you and your partner relate to each other the way you do.

Sessions won't just be spent re-hashing the surface level content of your arguments or trying to figure out who is "right." Instead, we'll look closely at the ways that you and your partner interact and figure out what those interactions mean about what each of you need on a deeper level.  We'll slow down when things start to get tense and get curious about the moments where one or both of you feel hurt, defensive, misunderstood, or withdrawn. Then we'll use the information we uncover to forge greater understanding between you.

We'll also explore how each of your relationship histories inform the way you react and respond to each other. We'll investigate the way past hurts and unmet needs drive what you seek from one another now. This allows each of you to unlock your capacity to offer each other comfort, safety, and security in a specific, personalized way.

As conflict softens, empathy grows, and emotional connection deepens, you'll be more prepared to face future challenges together and maintain a secure, lasting bond beyond the therapy space.

In couples work, I primarily use an approach called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which consists of three stages:

De-Escalation - Where we take down the temperature between you and your partner and untangle the knots of negative interaction patterns in your relationship. We'll give a name to the cycles you find yourself in, help you figure out their origins, and start building tools for disrupting and deescalating them.

Restructuring - Where we start practicing new ways of communicating that will allow you and your partner to connect and feel emotionally safe with one another. Sessions will focus on opening up, expressing needs, and learning how meet those needs for one another. It's here that we have conversations that deepen trust, restore intimacy, and help you feel on solid ground as a couple.

Consolidation - Where we practice the new skills and patterns we've developed until they start to feel instinctual and familiar. We'll look ahead to how you can tackle future difficulties as a team and explore ways to continue nurturing your bond. This phase prepares you to continue growing together and building a union of closeness, trust, and love.
